Sample Excuse Letter for Missing Work: Death of a Loved One

 Hi, <His/Her Name>!

    I would like to sincerely apologize for my unauthorized absences from <Start Date> to <End Date>. There is no excuse for my negligence, but still, I would like for you to hear my side.

    First off, please know that it was never my intention to disrespect you in any way. Here's my story. Last year, I initially requested to file a LOA for the reason that my family decided to permanently reside in <Province/City/Country>, where, as far as we believe, COVID cases are managed. As a <father/mother/etc>, I want what is best for my <son/daughter/parents>, so even though it's inconvenient, I know it was the right thing to do. I am well aware that my request hasn't been approved, or at least not yet.

    My <husband/father/etc> passed away on <DATE of death>... And this wasn't and has never been part of the plan. I had to put myself back together, to which I didn't know how. But I know, and I hope you don't mind me sharing this with you, that I have to be strong for my family who depends so much on me.

    Several issues aroused, such as <example of other external unexpected problems>. You never fail to remind me about my LOA not (or not yet) being approved. I'm sorry, I got stuck in an uncontrollable situation.

    This isn't me reasoning out. I am aware of the attendance policy. Also, I know that my absences brought a negative impact on my teammates and our company. But please, if there is anything that I can do for you to make this at least my final verbal warning, I commit to work to the best of my ability, as expected of me --- even go beyond.

    Again, I'm sorry and whatever your decision is, I will never take it against you. I know that you also commit to doing your job with due diligence.

Take care,

<Your Name>
