If there is one thing you can give to the Philippines, what is that gift?
When
I saw this question, lots of ideas entered my mind --- feeding program,
volunteer for the rescue team, fund raising, or simply
donate money, books, clothes, etc. Those are the things that I can
certainly do, simple things but would surely make a big difference. Very
easy, huh! But, is that what God really asked me to do? Giving the
excess?
I
am a call center employee. In my 27 years of stay here on earth, I
can’t count the number of times that I donated for calamity
victims or to poor people, or to charitable institutions. I used to
give old and unused clothes, groceries out of my extra money, excess
cash from my salary. See these words: UNUSED, EXTRA, EXCESS. Poor poor
victims. What if we don’t have unused clothes? What
if we don’t have extra cash? What if there’s no excess? Do these people
deserve leftovers? What if we were on their situation? I started
thinking about it 5 years ago. And the very fearful question I had for
myself was, what if one of my loved ones was on
that same situation? No leftovers for fortunate means no food for
unfortunate? Sounds unfair.
Giving
is not about giving to poor people only. That’s only a part of it.
Giving is sharing what you reserved for yourself. It’s
not about throwing away your leftovers. Filipinos are not dogs. Giving
is sharing even if you knew that what’s left for you may no longer be
sufficient. Giving what you have for yourself is really hard. I know,
I’ve been there. My heart was battling with my
mind.
For
2 consecutive years, I and my boyfriend used to go to Baguio for a
3-day, hmnn let’s say vacation. That’s every December, to
celebrate our anniversary. On our third year, we realized that the
money we spent in Baguio for 2 consecutive years, we should have given
them to those in need. We planned, together with our officemates,
managers, and all my friends, and we decided to spend
the money we reserved for our Baguio getaway to CHILDHAUS institution –
cancer patients. And am not gonna be hypocrite, it was hard at first.
The closer we get to the date of event, the battle between my heart and
mind gets harder. But on that day, you know
what, God calmed the storm between what I want and want He wants for me
– and my heart led my mind to what is right.
And
yes, we went to CHILDHAUS, spent almost whole day there. We ate lunch
with the kids and their parents. Not only that we spent
our money for these angels, but we gave our precious time as well --- I
could say that I gave them my heart and soul that day. I celebrated my
birthday and our 3rd year anniversary at CHILDHAUS and it felt like the best anniversary we had, ever.
Money,
time, my heart and soul --- these are all precious to me. These are
things that before, I hate sharing. But God, through angels
of CHILDHAUS, taught me of what GIVING really means. Currently, with
God’s grace, giving is no longer a struggle for me.
Spending time with other people in prayer for the country would be the best gift ever we could offer. CCF (Christ's
Commission Fellowship) Church has this Prayer and Fasting
week, twice every year (beginning of the year, and midyear). We fast for
7 days. EVERYDAY, we come together as one and pray – from 7PM to 9PM,
and again, that is everyday, and we call it
NIGHT WATCH. Some might say that it’s just a prayer, but I tell you, do
not underestimate the power of prayer. It is more powerful that what
you can give. God gives us the ability to give, and we are blessed to be
the one giving and not the one needing.
I
am blessed to be in the Philippines for so many reasons. Philippine
government needs us. Let change begin with me and you. Let’s
tell ourselves, “GIVING MY LEFTOVER IS OVER!”
Let’s do it the GLOBE way… #GLOBEProjectWonderful2014
G – GIVER – be not just a giver, but a cheerful Giver
L – LOVE – Love one another and giving will come out naturally from within
O – OFFER – Offer your heart and soul --- it can be anything important to you. Example, mine is time and presence
B – BELIEVE – Believe that God sees you when you do something good
E
– END - End everything in prayer. We normally pray before we do
something, but we should not forget to pray after we did something.
